If collecting wine is one of your hobbies, you will need to build your own custom wine rack. From what I’ve experienced when shopping for wine racks, you can hardly ever find the right product. Especially if you have more than enough wine like me. The more bottles of wine you have, the fewer product options there will be on the market. The time you’ve seen a particular cabinet or wine rack, but sometimes the color is very limited and most of the time the colors don’t match your kitchen wall or cabinet.

What I do is build my own wine rack and other joinery furniture. I am not a professional craftsman or anything like that. I’m just a normal guy with a garage to work in. As long as you have the space or the workshop, it’s a good place to start building.

The materials you need are:

  • Wood
  • Hammer
  • Drill
  • Chisels
  • Wood glue
  • Clamps
  • Table saw (or other type of saw)
  • Protective glasses, ear plugs, protective mask.

The woods have many different types. The cheaper it is, the less resistant it will be. For example, maple is hard, heavy, strong, and resistant to shock and abrasion. The walnut is also strong and tough, exceptionally durable, and not that heavy. Another great choice is oak. Oak is waterproof and extra strong and durable. The only downside to oak is its added toughness, unless you have some great power tools it can be difficult to work with. Pine is a soft wood, it is great if you want to build a small wine rack. I would not recommend using pine for medium to large projects. We are talking about celebrating wines here. If the wine breaks, there will be a liquid spill on the carpet and broken glass everywhere.

Not all of the tools listed above are required. It depends on the difficulty level of the plan you have chosen. Some plans require a more difficult tool that we don’t normally have in our garage. So be prepared and choose a plan before buying any materials or tools.
