Backing up your Google Calendar is easy, but restoring it is not that easy, unfortunately. If you have faced challenges with this process, the instructions in this article will help.

The main problem is that Google Calendar refuses to import events that have been deleted. You will see the message: “Error importing events: some of the events in this file were not imported because I had imported them into Google Calendar previously. Other events in this file have been imported …”

Therefore, the instructions here are one way to troubleshoot problems that come up, whether restoring from a total loss of data or a partial loss.

How to backup Google Calendar

  • Log into your Google calendar
  • In My calendars, click Settings
  • Click Export calendars.
  • Keep the file in a safe place, where you normally store your computer backups

How to restore your Google calendar

Unpacking the backup file

First of all, you should take this tip into account, as it is necessary for a full restoration or a partial restoration.

Google Calendar is useful when you are backing up your calendar. Automatically closes it to save space. However, you cannot re-import the zip file into Google Calendar. If you try, you will get the following error:

“Processed zero events … Your iCal / CSV file cannot be processed …”

Instead, go to the zip file and find a file xxx.ics Extract this file to your file system. The xxx.ics file can be imported into Google Calendar.

Restoring a Total Loss of Calendar Data

If you have suffered a total loss of calendar data, your best bet is to create a new calendar and use it in the future. This will allow you to import all your calendar data from your backup file.

  • In My calendars, click Settings.
  • Click Create new calendar.
  • Name it and click Create calendar. It will now appear in the list.
  • Click Settings.
  • Click Import calendar.
  • Find the your.ics file. Important! Make sure to select your .ics file, not the .zip file.
  • Select your new calendar and click to import. Your backup file is imported.
  • Click To close.

Your new calendar now has all the appointments in your backup file. You can delete the old one.

Restoring a partial loss of calendar data

If you have only lost part of your data, you can restore it to a new calendar and then selectively copy the appointments to your main calendar. First create a new calendar by following the steps above and import the full backup.

In My calendars, make sure both are selected. Entries in your main calendar will be one color and your new calendar another, so if there is an entry only in the new color, it has been removed from your main calendar.

  • To restore an appointment, click on the appointment.
  • Then click Plus
  • Choose Behaviour and copy to [email protected]
  • Click Save money and your appointment is reset.
  • Repeat for any other appointments you want to restore.

Optionally, you can delete the new calendar when you are done.
